Statewide Fire Overview - Lightning Series

Current Situation: On June 20, 2008, a thunderstorm system moved over California striking over two thousand lightning sparked fires. Today over 98 percent of those fires have been contained. California’s firefighters have received assistance from firefighting agencies across the state, nation and several foreign countries. Conditions throughout California remain extremely dry and fire danger remains very high.

Highway closures: Firefighters remind everyone to use extreme caution while driving on roads affected by fires. All major roads are now open. There may be some delays on State Highways 70, 140 and 299. Travelers are advised to seek current information on secondary road closures from local law enforcement.

Evacuations: Areas of Mariposa, Plumas and Trinity counties are under evacuation orders and voluntary evacuations at this time. Residents are advised to monitor their local fire situation, check with local law enforcement agencies for information, and be prepared to evacuate when necessary.

Firefighters continue to make suppression progress in northern California. The American River Complex was contained at 20,541 acres.

A total of 28 fires and complexes are burning throughout the western and southern states. California remains the most active with 12 large fires.

On July 25, on the Eagle Fire, a portion of the Iron Complex near Junction City, California, Olympic National Park firefighter, Andrew Palmer was fatally injured. On July 26, a firefighter was fatally injured on the Panther Fire near Happy Camp, California. The firefighting community extends condolences to the families and friends of these fallen firefighters.

Australia and New Zealand are providing 44 fire specialists and managers to assist with fire suppression operations in California.

Two MAFFS C-130 airtankers from the 145th Airlift Wing, Charlotte, North Carolina are supporting the State of California at McClellan Airpark in Sacramento, California. The Mission Commander is LTC Charles Davis, 145th Airlift Wing, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Weather Discussion: Winds will continue across the northwest quarter of the country. Wet and dry thunderstorms are possible in Colorado. Humidity will increase in Texas today.

Conditions:

The fire is burning in the Merced River Drainage, on both sides of the river. The fire is burning with a rapid rate of spread in multiple directions. Accessibility problems due to steep and rocky terrain.

Active fire behavior is being observed in all directions primarily on the south and east flanks.

The fire is causing partial and complete closures of Hwy 140 leading to the main entrance to Yosemite National Park. For the latest highway conditions visit Caltrans.

The BTU Lightning Complex in California was contained at 59,440 acres. The Lime Complex, Panther Fire, Ukonom Complex, Yolla Bolly Complex, and Telegraph Fire remain active in California.

Nationally, there are 28 fires and complexes burning 483,199 acres. Six new large fires were in Texas, California, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada.

On June 26 a firefighter was fatally injured on the Panther fire near Happy Camp, California. The firefighting community extends condolences to the family and friends of the fallen firefighter.

Iron and Alps Complex (Shasta-Trinity National Forest): 79,154 acres at 78 percent contained. This complex of four fires is one mile north of Junction City. Some residences and power lines remain threatened. Evacuations for Corral Bottom were lifted.

Panther (Klamath National Forest): 2,056 acres at zero percent contained. This fire is 14 miles southwest of Happy Camp. Active fire behavior was reported. Structures are threatened.
NEW Rich (Plumas National Forest): 200 acres at zero percent contained. This fire is 20 miles west of Quincy. Extreme fire behavior was reported. Residences were evacuated.
Siskiyou Complex (Klamath National Forest): 55,872 acres at 46 percent contained. This complex of two fires is 18 miles southwest of Happy Camp. Structures and cultural sites are threatened.
